Disconnect and shut off exterior spigots, insulate lines in the garage, crawlspace, and exterior walls, keep the heat on and cabinet doors open during hard freezes, test your sump pump and add a battery backup, and air-seal and insulate the attic so ice dams cannot form. Know where your main water shut-off is so you can stop a burst pipe fast.

No water or a trickle from a faucet on a cold morning, frost or bulging on an exposed line, and a line that is ice-cold to the touch all point to a freeze. Keep the faucet open, warm the area gently, and be ready to shut the main, because the split floods the moment the ice thaws.
